Jürgen Klopp is relieved following the decision of his central back, Joel Matip, to decline the request of Cameroon to play at the African Cup of Nations 2017 which will take place from January in Gabon.

The Cameroon international had confirmed his intention not to join the Indomitable Lions for the African campaign against the wish of coach Hugo Broos.

Matip, taking on Neymar, has not played for Cameroon since 2015.

“We had a discussion a few weeks ago. That’s why I’m not surprised, “confessed the Liverpool manager.

“The players have to take such decisions themselves. There is nothing the club can do about it.”

Senegal’s Sadio Mane took a contrary decision and will join his country for the competition despite his success with his club. Asked about this, Jurgen Klopp believes that “in terms of Joel, it’s different because he was born and raised in Germany. This is not bad for our club.”
